Anurag Kashyap's 'Bombay Velvet' has been in the news for all right reasons in the past few weeks or so. First he surprised everyone by managing a casting coup of sorts as he got Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma on board as the leading protagonists. Then the makers wasted no time in announcing the release date which is going to be the coveted Christmas Day of 2014. On top of this, the movie will feature leading film-maker Karan Johar in a proper negative role. Marking his debut as one of the main leads in a feature film, Karan will essay the role of a rich businessman who plays a crucial role in the life of Ranbir Kapoor's character onscreen.
Coming back to 'Bombay Velvet', it is going to be set in Mumbai of 1950-1970 and it will be the first film of a trilogy on how the city became a metropolis. Ranbir Kapoor will play the role of a street fighter in the movie while Anushka Sharma will be seen as a Jazz singer. Anurag Kashyap is known for his hard hitting dramas like 'Black Friday', 'Dev D', 'Gulaal', 'Udaan' and the recent 'Gangs of Waseypur' series. This will be the biggest movie of his career in terms of production costs. Apparently, Ranbir Kapoor is currently shooting 'Besharam' directed by Abhinav Kashyap, brother of Anurag Kashyap. This will be the first movie together for Ranbir-Anushka who rocked as the hosts of TOIFA Awards held at Vancouver last month.
